By definition, a counterculture possesses values and mores that are in opposition to those of an established society. When one hears the word “counterculture,” it may prompt images of hippies, punks, demonstrators, or underground political movements – in other words, a group of people (usually young) with a purpose, who are trying to make a change or say something meaningful about the larger culture in which they live. In addition to demonstrations, music, or simply lifestyle choices, this kind of action may be taken in writing. Hunter S. Thompson and Kurt Vonnegut prove this point in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Breakfast of Champions respectively,…show more content…

Regardless of what one sees in the metaphor, the question may be asked: Why does Thompson choose to present his views in this manner? Why, instead of writing an articulate analysis of the state of American ideals, does he hide this meaning in heaps of LSD and criminal activity?

Many American countercultures have made their points by making a spectacle of what society has done to them. What better way to convey a message than by shoving the problem in everyone’s face? Some controversial examples must be made to show the masses what they may not see in their everyday lives. It is the reason punks wear dog collars – they are slaves to capitalist society. Similarly, Fear and Loathing’s narrator shows us what his life is like in order to demonstrate what is wrong with American culture, and in himself he gives us an example of the problems that arise because of it. Though some may see Thompson’s style as outrageous and irrelevant, when meanings come through they are more hard-hitting because of the effects produced by a superficial reading of the text – the horror of the life of a hardcore drug user.

Vonnegut’s views are not quite as hidden in Breakfast of Champions. In fact, he makes the reader blatantly aware of his opinions and attitudes. His parallel tale
